You Don’t Need to Be the Loudest Person in the Room
Nov 02, 2026
I spent around 40 years working in television and radio. I presented sport, interviewed thousands of people and spoke to large audiences. Yet walking into a networking event often left me uncomfortable. Without a camera or a microphone, starting a conversation felt harder.
For years, I thought I needed to become more outgoing. I put pressure on myself to sound interesting, keep talking and make a good impression. Instead of listening to the person in front of me, I worried about what to say next.

My approach changed when I started treating communication as a skill to practise. A conversation became easier when I focused on a few manageable steps. Introduce yourself. Ask a simple question. Listen to the answer. Follow up on something the other person mentions.
You don’t need a clever opening line. “How do you know the host?” or “What brought you along today?” gives you a place to start. You also don’t need to meet everyone. Set yourself a smaller goal, such as introducing yourself to one person and spending a few minutes getting to know them.
This is why I developed Unmasked, my online course for introverts who want to feel more comfortable in social and business situations. Across six modules, I guide you through preparing for an event, entering the room, starting conversations, keeping them going, talking about yourself and leaving politely.
Unmasked gives you practical steps to use while staying true to your personality. The course also includes a cheat sheet and audio resources to help you prepare before your next event.
If you’ve ever hovered near the door or checked your phone to avoid starting a conversation, I understand the feeling. I’ve done both. Your next step doesn’t need to be a room full of new contacts. Start with one introduction.
Explore Unmasked and build your communication skills, one conversation at a time.
