Why Media Interview Preparation Matters for Your Business

A media interview gives you an opportunity to share your knowledge, explain your business and reach a wider audience. It also puts your communication skills under pressure. Without preparation, even an experienced business owner risks giving long answers, missing key points or struggling with an unexpected question. Media interview preparation helps you speak clearly and give the audience something useful to remember.

Before you agree to a radio interview, television interview or podcast appearance, ask about the topic, audience and format. Find out whether the interview is live or recorded and how much time you will have. Ask why the journalist wants your perspective. Understanding the purpose helps you choose relevant examples and pitch your answers at the right level. Your job is to contribute to the story while making your message clear.

One of the most useful media training exercises is to prepare three key messages. What do you want people to understand, remember or do after hearing you? Write each message in one short sentence, then support it with a fact, example or brief story. Replace industry jargon with everyday language. Effective interview techniques start with clear thinking. If you struggle to explain your point simply during preparation, work on it before the microphone goes live.

Practise answering difficult questions as well as comfortable ones. Ask a colleague to challenge your claims, question your pricing or raise a concern a customer might have. Record your answers and listen for rambling, defensive language and missed opportunities to explain your position. For crisis communication, check your facts and establish what information you are authorised to share. If you do not know an answer, say so and explain how you will follow up.

Good media interview preparation gives you a structure without making you sound rehearsed. You still need to listen, answer the question and speak like a person having a conversation. Whether you are preparing for your first television appearance or improving your radio interview skills, preparation helps you use the opportunity well. Know your audience, check your facts and practise your key messages. The work you do before the interview shapes what people take away from it.
